The Capital City, Cardiff

The capital city of Cardiff is host to a lovely Welsh people with many areas for shopping, eating, and drinking. The retail park has something for everyone – high street stores, large shopping centres and various markets. Be sure to have cawl or rarebit before you leave the area or you won’t be able to say you’ve experiences all South Wales has to offer.

Twenty minutes from the city centre is the Cardiff Castle, which is a 2000-year-old fortress that was reconstructed in the 1800’s and now stands in pristine condition attracting visitors year-round. While they don’t currently allow visitors inside the castle, the open space around is a popular place for a picnic or a game of football.

Cardiff is one of the wettest places in the country, but its charm is worth the drizzle so bring your wellies! Whether it is your first visit or your 20th, Cardiff is sure to please. (Photo: Cardigan Castle, Ceredigion, Wales)

Brecon Mountain Railway for the Day

The Brecon Mountain Railway is a lovely full scale, narrow-gauge heritage railway that travels five miles into the Brecon Beacons National Park. It runs from Pant, to Torpantau following the route of the original Brecon & Merthyr Railway which originated in 1859 and closed in 1964. The returning train stops at an intermediate station in Pontsticill where there is a café and children’s play area.

As one would imagine, the Railway is a popular attraction for steam train enthusiasts. A scaled down steam engine with multiple passenger carriages allows those with a love for the tracks to have some of the most scenic routes South Wales has to offer. The all-weather observation coaches are a sure hit with the young – and young at heart.

There are stops in both directions for the café which has beverages and light refreshments. At Pant Station there are tearooms, a gift shop and a workshop. With several trains a day on this 10-mile round trip journey, be sure to book online early as seats can fill up quickly.
