Discover the Dicovery Museum
For those with a love of history, the Discovery Museum is Newcastle favorite. This award-winning, free museum was founded in 1934 and has evolved into a large, 3-floor attraction of models, exhibits, world-firsts and inventions that will entertain those of any age.
One of the largest attractions at the Discovery Museum is the Turbinia, the first steam turbine-powered steamship which was built as an experimental vessel in 1894. This ship was by far the fastest of its time and revolutionized the maritime industry. At 32 metres long, you can’t miss this awe-inspiring piece of history adorning the central hall of the museum.
Hands-on science projects will delight the kids while the adults will revel in the fascinating facts about Newcastle and Tyneside. Fortresses of the North East
With more than 70 castles in the North East, this region has virtually inexhaustible history to become immersed in. Many of these fortresses stand tall today inviting visitors while others lie in ruins for preservation, all are remembered as a part of English archives.
The Windsor of the North, Alnwick Castle, is also one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. Harry Potter fans will delight in seeing filming areas and then head off to learn to ride a broomstick. Those with less affinity for wizardry can explore the state rooms, partake in medieval crafts, or battle the labyrinth of the Dragon Quest to see if you can win against the mythical beast!

Day or Night: The Kielder Observatory
Visitors will never view the skies the same again after seeing them from the Kielder Observatory, a world class facility for astronomy by all accounts. Opened in 2008, the observatory receives about 20K visitors a year to its small classroom and then out onto its viewing decks for the best dark skies throughout the UK or Europe.
With a wide range of telescopes, including solar telescopes for daytime observing during the summer months, the observatory hosts those of all ages for several hours each night, all year round. The facility has special events aimed at children, late night family events and relaxed astronomy. Viewers may also choose a night that focuses on the moon or planets.
